Factors such as rock hardness, abrasiveness, jointing, and the required hole diameter must be considered. Drillers can choose different button shapes, face profiles (flat, concave, or convex), and skirt designs to improve penetration rate, directional stability, and service life in specific formations.

Regular inspection for wear, cracking, or broken buttons allows timely replacement or regrinding where applicable. Correct operating parameters—such as rotation speed, feed force, and impact power—help avoid premature failure.
