Drag bits may also be used in softer formations where cutting rather than crushing is more effective.The geometry of the bit plays an important role in its performance. Factors such as tooth shape, cone angle, button placement, and nozzle configuration influence penetration rate, debris removal, and heat dissipation. Efficient removal of cuttings from the borehole is essential, since accumulated debris can reduce drilling speed and increase wear. Many open-pit drill bits are designed with flushing channels or air passages to clear rock fragments and cool the cutting surfaces during operation.Durability is one of the most important characteristics of an open-pit drill bit. Because replacement requires downtime and adds cost, operators prefer bits that offer a long service life while maintaining consistent penetration rates. Wear resistance, heat tolerance, and structural strength are therefore critical. Regular inspection helps detect wear patterns, cracked inserts, broken teeth, or other damage before failure occurs.The choice of drill bit depends on several factors, including rock hardness, abrasive content, drilling depth, and equipment type.
